More detailed information is now available via our Christmas Volunteer Handbook.
If you have not volunteered before, you must attend one of the training sessions – this is mandatory for us to fulfil our obligations to you regarding health and safety. Failure to attend a training session will automatically exclude you from helping us this year. All training sessions will be held in the Charter Street Ragged School, which is the venue of the Christmas project, so that you can view the building.
If you have volunteered in the last two years, you do not need to attend a training session but are welcome to do so if you would like a ‘refresher’.
The venue – Charter Street Ragged School, 142 Dantzic Street, Manchester, M4 4DE – is a very old building with lots of stairs and no lifts. Facilities for both volunteers and clients are very limited, and we recommend that volunteers should be reasonably fit and able-bodied.
We recommend that volunteers are up to date with their routine immunisations such as Diphtheria and Tetanus. Meningitis C is recommended for young people up to the age of 25 years.
Transport and Travel Expenses
Lifeshare is unable to provide transport for either volunteers or clients. We will, however, pay volunteers’ expenses equivalent to the cost of travel by public transport up to a limit of £4.50 per day (details of how to claim will be given at the training sessions). We also provide food and drink during the working day. Please remember that on certain days public transport will be limited or not available at all during some days of the holiday period.
You will normally be allocated your chosen sessions, but if we have too many volunteers on a particular shift we may ask people to change. Should you wish to change any dates given in your application, please let us know as soon as possible. We will only acknowledge receipt of your application by email, but will remind you of your chosen training session by email or post. If you do not receive any communication from us just turn up for your training session.
We have a number of t-shirts available if you would like to identify yourself more clearly during your shift. They cost £8 and are available at all training sessions and during the Christmas Project itself.
